AMERICAN VALUES IN TRANSITION

The “first” Americans were provided with a Constitution and a Declaration of Independence that explicitly delineated various rights, privileges and principles, such as the pursuit of Happiness. Modern Americans have access to a wide palette of programs and subsidies derived through various Amendments and initiatives that have dramatically expanded the scope of government to meet the increasing demands of a citizenry grown in size, diversity, self-importance and dependence. Consequently, we find ourselves mired in astronomical debt, as the purveyors of our entitlement society have made the pursuit of happiness a guarantee against hardship or failure, in a foolhardy, if well-intentioned attempt to engineer equality of results, across the board. Your opinion on a wide range of issues can lend clarity to where we stand as a country, and perhaps help guide citizens and government through this latest transition.
